Five centuries of global history were written inthe Hofburg. The Schweizerhof
is the heart of the Hofburg and dates from the 13th century. Of the
complex’s medieval core, only the Burgkapelle remains. On
Sundays and holidays the Wiener Sängerknaben add lustre to the chapel’s
Morning Service (except in summer). The Stallburg with its
arcade-garden is regarded as the most beautiful Renaissance building in
Vienna. It houses the Lippizaner stud farm. The Amalienburg is
connected to the early-baroque Leopoldinischer Trakt (wing). Opposite
lies the wing of the Reich Chancellery and the National Library. On
Michaelerplatz the Michaelerkuppel with its enormous portal
determines the limits of the civilian section.
Also worth a visit are the Geistliche and Weltliche
Schatzkammer (Spiritual and Worldly Treasure Room) (Wednesday-Monday
10am-6pm), the state chamber of the Nationale Bibliothek (National
Library), the Imperial Apartments and the Hofsilber-und
Tafelkammer (Royal Silver and Table Room)
and
recently the Sisi Museum as well.
The Hofburg still plays a political role, for it houses the offices
of the Austrian President. The Neue Burg (New Castle) (1871-1913)
contains the Ephesos Museum , the Museum for Völkerkunde (Museum of
Folklore) , furthermore Europe’s most wide-ranging collection of
weapons and a collection of musical instruments.
