One almost needs to be a marathon runner to get around the Habsburg
art collection in a single day. This, the city’s most important
museum, contains in fact one of the greatest art-historical collections
in the world. The magnificent building was designed chiefly by Gottfried
Semper and Karl von Hasenauer (interior architecture). Its interior was
taken in hand by artists such as Hans Makart, Max Ernt and Gustav Klimt.
The picture gallery forms the heart of the museum and gives a splendid
survey of European painting with works by a.o. Rubens, Rembrandt,
Breughel the Elder, Dürer, Raphael, Titian, Veronese, Arcimboldo and
Velasquez. Also on show: collections of Oriental art, antiquities (in
the west wing), sculptures, applied art and coins.

When
people were looking for a suitable area for the exhibition of
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, they chose the buildings of the furniture
factory Thonet, from the end of the 19th century. They offered enough
space for a Hundertwasser-Museum, with an overview of his work
(paintings, graphics, tapestries, architecture models) and space for
international traveling exhibitions as well.
