the avant-garde architect Adolf Loos is an example of pure functional
architecture without frills.

The new Museum of Applied Art was founded in 1864 as the ‘Museum
for Art and Industry’. The handsome building has sgrafitto decorations
and majolica portraits by famous artists on its façade, and was
constructed in 1871 in neo-Renaissance style by Heinrich Ferstel. On
view: European and Oriental applied art from Roman times to the present.
Main attractions: Viennese Jugendstil, Biedermeyer, Thonet furniture and
works from the Wiener Werkstätten (Ateliers for Applied Art founded by
Josef Hoffmann and Kolo Moser in 1903).
