In
Valduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, you can see the works of the
monarch’s famous private collection as well, but the masterpieces, for
example numerous old masters, are housed in Vienna. The reason for this:
the family is originally from the Donau. Furthermore, the baroque
environment of the Gartenpalais suits Cranach, van Dyck, Rafaël and
Rembrandt better than the minimalistic concrete building in Vaduz. Since
2004, after the renovation of the palace, you can see pieces again from
the early Renaissance to the Austrian Romanticism, a total of 200
paintings and 59 sculptures and furniture, and all of this on a surface
of 2300 m2. The monarch invested 20 million euro’s in the family castle
in Vienna (nobility mandatory). The palace is a recommendation because
of the newly discovered fresco’s and the baroque garden that merges into
an English scenery park.

The
collection of business couple Essl is housed in an imposing building,
the Schömer-Haus, at the sole of the baroque seminary Klosterneuburg and
counts over 4500 pieces in an exhibition area with a surface of 3200 m2.
It is the largest collection of Austrian paintings after 1945 and it
contains the works of Arnulf Rainer, Hermann Nitsch and Günter Brus. The
‘Wiener Aktionismus’, the ‘Phantastische Realisten’ and other style
trends of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century are
systematically documented. Separate exhibitions are dedicated to several
artists. The collection was expanded with the works of e.g. Baselitz,
Immendorf, Lüpertz, Appel, Kirkeby, Tapies, Alechinsky, Zitko. Studio’s,
a cafeteria and an art shop are connected to the museum as well.
