Palais
Schwarzenberg
III., Schwarzenbergplatz 9
Tel. 798 45 15 (Hotel)
From 1716 on, this edifice was owned by the influential Schwarzenberg
family, large landowners in both Austria and Bohemia, who for
generations served the Habsburgs as politicians, generals, civil
servants and clergymen. The Schwarzenbergs are even now active as
lobbyists and, for example, as advisers to the Czech government. The ‘Palais’
was chiefly designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and his son,
and now contains a first-class hotel with an excellent gastronomical
restaurant.
Pasqualatihaus
I., Mölker Bastei 8
Tel. 535 89 05
Tuesday-Sunday 9am-12.15pm, 1pm-4.30pm
During his Vienna period, Beethoven moved house no less than sixty
(60!) times. Only in the house belonging to his friend and physician
Pasqualati did he live repeatedly between 1804 and 1815. Here he
composed Fidelio and some symphonies.
Peterskirche
I., Petersplatz
Tel. 533 64 33
Monday-Friday 6.30am-6.30pm, Saturday/Sunday 7.30am-6.30pm
Enormous baroque church, begun in 1702 by Gabriele Montani and
completed until 1733 by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The first Christian
shrine of the Late-Roman period is said to have stood here. A giant dome
arches over a nave with a 56 m diametre. The choir astounds by a large
trompe l’oeuil, and the baroque pulpit is particularly theatrical.
